Technical Diffiuclties - Final Resit

For my final resit I have, as advised, taken 2 characters and enhanced the animation to include facial features and more character movement.

I chose the Cash Register and T.V. as I felt that these were the pieces where the voices added the most quality and personality to the items.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Crit Presentation

Here is my Crit Presentation document, showcasing the progress of the project.

Here is my Pre-Vis sequence of Technical Difficulties. I decided to give the characters just mouths, as I feel it makes the animation more stylistic and recognisable, plus gives me a better challenge of conveying the emotions of the characters.

Technical Difficulties Redux - OBS Machine Model

This is the untextured model of my OBS Machine. I will give it basic textures for the Pre-Vis, and will add more detail to the model and textures in the final animation.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Remotes Models

These are the models I am using in the Pre-Vis. They will be more detailed in the final animation. The Light Grey remote is the DVD Remote, and the Blue remote is the TV Remote.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Cash Register Model V001

This is my initial model for the Cash Register character. I am unsure whether to model buttons/keys for the register, or to make them part of the texture. I will try both and see which version I think works better.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Interim Crit Presentation

This is my Interim Crit presentation for Technical Difficulties.

This is my original animatic. I have since gone back and decided to remove the first hospital scene, to cut down on the length of the animation and to help it flow better.

This is an excerpt from my updated animatic. I intend to have this finished by the evening of 08/04/2019.

Technical Difficulties Redux: TV Animation Test 001

I decided to animate the "Squash & Stretch" style of animation for the TV using a lattice deformer, as it gives more of a "Brave Little Toaster" style of movement, which is what I'm going for.

Technical Difficulties Redux - TV Model

I have created a 3D Model of my TV Character. I will be going on to rig the model. I will most likely use the "Squash and Stretch" Style of animation, as I previously did in this post. Whilst creating the images for the post, I realised that by rendering them out it would be harder to see the parts of the model, so I switched to creating screen-grabs with wireframe-on-shaded.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Cushion

Here is a close-up of the cushion I have added to the Living Room environment, complete with colour swatch.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Living Room Extras

I have added a cushion and a rolled-up newspaper to the "Living Room" set, to make it look more lived-in.

I will be posting the cushion on a separate post, to show it off in more detail, along with the colours used in a swatch.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Hospital Storyboard

To add more depth and world-building to the Hospital scene, to make up for cutting the first OBS Section out, I have added this part to the storyboard - the camera starts outside the doors to a hospital room. It travels forward, through the window of the door, and turns round to face the OBS Machine.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Characterisation -TV & Cash Register

I have "characterised" the Television and Cash Register more, taking inspiration from The Brave Little Toaster, giving the TV Glasses and face lines, as well as giving the Cash Register lips and Crows' Feet.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Characters

My approach to this piece is rather different in that I firstly sourced the voices and then built the characters around them, as opposed to creating the characters and then giving them voices. No actual script was written for the piece, either, as it evolved from the dialogue created by the characters involved when speaking to them on their subject matter.

I am hoping to achieve a comedic effect with my piece whilst highlighting the difficulties that different generations come across due to technology.

Characters:

  • TV
An older model, who is content with the 3 channels he can get. He doesn't see the need for any more, as they only show repeats of what he's already seen! He's quite an opinionated fellow - and that's putting it mildly!
  • Cash Register
A manual, old style model without any modern computer components or technology. She is happy to use her own brain to calculate prices, rather than having a calculator do it for her!
  • TV Remote
A jovial character, who likes to have banter with his friend, the DVD Remote. Quick-witted, he takes every opportunity he can get to mock his friend.
  • DVD Remote
A slightly disgruntled character, who doesn't fully understand the need for the latest technological fad of streaming services, such as Netflix, rather than using him and his DVD discs - although he wasn't particularly fond of the My Little Pony DVD they put in him the last time...
  • OBS Machine
A much younger character, who embraces the newer technology, and is glad things are moving forward in the hospital they work in. They are eager to see where things progress to next, helping the environment they are in and enabling them to be valued.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Antique Shop Mood Board

I have created a "mood board" for different items that can/will appear in the antique shop, to make it seem more alive and populated.

I will go on to create "mood boards" like this for each setting, so that I can get a better idea of how to flesh out each location.

Technical Difficulties Redux - OGR

DESCRIPTION

For my Premise Project, I will be creating an animation in the style of "Creature Comforts", but instead of animals, different pieces of Technology from various eras will be interviewed, being asked what they feel about the modern state of Tech and how it affects them personally. The Characters within this piece will be an Old-Fashioned Cash Register and TV, who reside in an Antique shop and are very stuck in their ways, a DVD Remote and TV Remote, who live in a modern suburban home and are vary wary of services like Netflix and Amazon Prime putting them out of business, and an OBS Machine in a London Hospital, who weighs up the pros and cons of Digital vs Physical patient records.

TV COLOUR KEYS

These are the Colour Keys I have produced for my TV Character. I will more than likely go for the more dull, drowsy brown/beige colours, as they fit the character and the scene much better, although perhaps going for a lighter or more playful colour will provide a necessary contrast in the scene.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MARSH ANTIQUES EXTERIOR + INTERIOR

This is the first Exterior shot I have created of the Antique shop, which the TV and Cash Register Characters will be situated in. I have drawn it at this particular angle so that the image is slightly more dynamic, rather than just being a more boring, flat-on image. I will create other angles of the exterior to cut between when visiting this location.

These are the first two interior shots of the Antique Shop that I have created. They show an ornate wooden box, and a Metal Jug. I have created these shots to add something in to catch the viewer's attention, otherwise, like with the aforementioned flat shot of the exterior, it would be particularly boring, and would not draw them in to the scene.

ANIMATIC EXCERPT

Technical Difficulties Animatic Redux OGR from Joe Warrilow on Vimeo.

I am working through creating an Animatic for my piece. Following feedback from Alan, I have used cuts between wide shots and close-ups to help keep the audeinces attention, rather than just leaving the piece "flat" - I will also be trying to think of ways to make the characters mve as I go along. For The Cash Register and TV, they will most likely stick with the "Squash & Stretch" style of animation, whereas the Remotes will roll on their respective surfaces and use their faces more.

Technical Difficulties Redux - Intro Storyboard

I have updated the storyboard for the intro to the animation. It will start off with a blank screen, then the Camera will pull back, slowly revealing the characters, before finally showing the Title of the animation. I will transition out of the title credits sequence via the "TV powering down" effect.

Technical Difficulties Animatic Redux - Part 1

This is the first part of the Redux for my Animatic of Technical Difficulties. I am going back through and updating and cleaning up the frames to full colour from the basic sketches, as well as adding in the movement for the characters.

These are the book covers I created in class today. For each cover, on the left you have where I was blocking out where the images would go, and on the right you have the finished product.
